When I was 15, 50 years ago, my grandmother tried to get me to read this book. She said it was her favorite book. I declined. When I found it free on Kindle, I ordered it and much to my surprise I read it and loved it. It was written in the 1800s, so the language is dated and flowery, but you just have to hang in there to get the story after the setting is established. Of course, it has a moral to it. After reading it, my husband and I made a trip to Lookout Mtn and Chattanooga TN where the book was set. At Lookout Mtn., the park ranger knew all about Augusta J. Evans and St. Elmo. At the bottom of Lookout Mtn. there is a community called St Elmo named for the book. Fifty years ago, I don't think I would have been patient enough to read this book, but I am so glad I finally did. Thanks Grandma. Vintage novel. I ordered because it was ready by my grandparents in their book club before they married. My mother was named Edna Earl for the main character. Very difficult to read in the archaic wording, but fascinating to me.
Augusta J. Evans was born in my hometown. I bought this book to discover why it was one of the most read of it's time, and it appears to me the reason is because it was a social argument for the intellectual equality of women when then there were few respected as authors and none as eligible to vote. It is beautifully written, and I've enjoyed it immensely while sitting on the Broadway of Ms. Evans' city. A local mansion is renamed after the title and one of the main characters in her novel.
I grew up in Mobile, AL, the home of Agusta Evans Wilson. Therefore all schoolchildren were encouraged to read her book. But I have read and re-read it over the the years till it is as comfortable as a well-worn blanket! The style is a bit old-fashioned, but an excellent story. Yes, it is a bit of a morality tale, but that doesn't detract from timeless principles and "spinning a good yarn"!
Wow!! The book came exactly like the one I lost (someone stole), with the same girl, or young woman,in pink and red display, exactly!! Also, in about same condition, too. Binding is still good, not many pages loose, extremely readable, and JUST PERFECT. To top it all off, it was delivered to me in less than a week. Thank you seller, very much. I thought I lost my St. Elmo forever!!!
If you want to go back in time to the 19th century and absorb yourself in the culture of the time, this is a good book to read. The plot is very interesting, and keeps you absorbed, wanting to know what eventually happens between the two main characters. The ending is a surprise, to say the least. Anyway, it's worth the time to read and enjoy, whether or not you might agree with the standards held so strongly by the main character from whose viewpoint the story is told.
I had never heard of this author, although apparently she was one of the most popular American writers of the 19th century. Published in 1866, this novel was written “in the domestic sentimental style of the Victorian Age….of St. Elmo one critic maintained, ‘The trouble with the heroine of St. Elmo was that she swallowed an unabridged dictionary.’"
Mother gave me this book to read when I was a young girl, and I have always loved it. Mind you, the vocabulary is extremely upper-crust, and the story is dense in literary allusions--so if you are used to the kind of language used today on TV, in magazines, etc., and if you are not familiar with the literature of the past, you will hate this book, and feel as if you are reading in a foreign language. It's a trip to the world of yesteryear.
